CMS announced Sunday that the 2019 Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) reporting deadline has been extended from March 30 to April 30 to allow providers to focus on COVID-19 response. Additionally, any group or individual who elects not to submit data prior to the deadline will automatically receive a neutral payment adjustment in 2021.
The agency did not make any definitive announcements regarding adjustments or relief for 2020 reporting requirements, which would typically be due in March of 2021. CMS said it is still evaluating all options at this time.
Those who are confident in their 2019 submission should proceed with reporting in order to receive a bonus payment adjustment in 2021. However, if you were unsure whether or not you will manage to exceed the penalty threshold of 30 points, it may be prudent to refrain from reporting to ensure you receive a neutral adjustment and avoid the Medicare payment penalty of up to 7%.
