CMS Delays Signature Requirements

December 21, 2010

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 that they will be delaying the implementation of the Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) Final rule provision requiring a physician’s signature on all requisitions for tests paid on the CMS Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule. It was originally scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2011.

CMS did not specify an actual date when the delay will end and the policy will take effect, but it appears the delay will last through the first quarter of 2011.  CMS states it will use this time to focus on developing educational and outreach materials to help edify those who will be affected by this plan but are unaware or do not understand the guidelines.
